School Policies
Many
schools have rules for ettiquette and class procedure, we are no
different in this regard. To support the school, maintian the cleanliness
of the space, and to insure that new students get a consistent impression
of what is expected of them, we ask that students respect the following
policies:
- For each class, students should arrive early
enough to change and begin warming up, and should do so silently
so as to not interrupt the ongoing class by.
- If a student knows that they will be missing
classes, they should contact their instructor by phone, in person,
or by email in advance of the date(s) in question to notify them
of the upcoming abscence.
- Though it should go without saying, we will
say it anyway, Personal Hygeine is very important. We ask that
students arrive clean, with clean workout clothes, trimmed nails,
and clean equipment. This will save us both the embarrassment
of having to discuss the matter with you personally.
- We ask that students wear a school t-shirt and
plain sweat pants to classes. Tournament or Seminar shirts are
allowed, essentially anything Martial Arts Related, Thai Boxing
shorts, etc. are allowed. We ask that students wear long pants
to grappling and Letha Yoga classes.
- Certain equipment and apparel is up to student
discretion, including Groin Cup and Supporters, Sports Bras and
Female Groin Protectors.
- Students should wear Mouthguards for all bagwork,
grappling, sparring and padwork. Ideally, students will have a
Shock Doctor single mouthguard, which has the best protection,
liability offer and airflow.
- Eye protection (safety goggles) should be worn
for close range Knife-work, interactive stick training, and knife
sparring drills. Though the school has some loaner goggles, these
have a tendency to fog quickly. To avoid this frustration., students
are encouraged to get their own set of safety goggles for training.
- We prefer that students wear Wrestling or mat
shoes which are reserved for training in the studio only, as hard
sole tennis shoes, gym shoes and outdoor street shoes have a tendency
to tear up our mats.
- Students should bring all of their equipment
with them each time they attend class. Equipment bags should be
kept on the shelves provided or against the wall with the windows.
Students' coats and changes of clothing should be hung on the
hangers provided, off the floor, shoes placed just below. All
equipment should be kept off the chairs, as these are reserved
for visitors.
- Students will be required and expected
to get their own equipment within 6 months of enrolling in classes.
Depending on the classes attended, this will include: Bag Gloves,
Hand Wraps, a Mouthguard, a Pair of Sticks, a Training Dagger,
a School T-Shirt, a Pair of Focus Mitts, Training Shoes and a
Judo or JiuJitsu Gi.
- Other equipment may also include Specialty
Weapons (Bo staff, Bokken, Tonfa, Whip, Training Swords, Canes,
Multiple Training Daggers, Palm Sticks, etc.), Specialty Apparel
(Thai Boxing Shorts, Shin/Instep Protectors, Rashguards or Under
Armor, Bike Shorts, Bandanas or head bands, and other protective
apparel), and Specialty Equipment (Light Bag Gloves, Street Hockey
Gloves, Forearm Protection, Thai Pads, Jump Rope, and Equipment
Bags)
- All equipment borrowed or used in a class should
be replaced EXACTLY the way it was found. From time to time, students
will be asked to help in straightening and cleaning the school
- Those who clean up completely are completely
welcome here.
House Rules
1. Don't be an ass.
Please
leave unnecessary baggage such as politics and stylistic comparisons
outside. The only pontificating allowed will be that of the instructors.
Share your opinion, but respect that of others, and remember that
everyone here has different interests, viewpoints and priorities,
and may not be interested in hearing about yours. Open-mindedness
is mandatory.
2. Train safely and often - No Injuries.
There
is a simple equation to success in the Martial Arts: More Time Training
= More Results. Injuries are an avoidable obstacle in that formula.
Don't get hurt, don't hurt yourself or others. You are 50% responsible
for your own safety at all times in training. If it seems like a
bad idea, it probably is. No injury is worth the time off of training
and risk of permanent damage.
3. Do not disrespect your training partner.
Without
your training partner, you will get nowhere. Please respect the
offering they are making to your betterment in participating with
you by returning the favor. See rule #1.
4. Never forget what you've learned.
The
more time we have to take to cover previous material, the less time
we have for new information. Take notes and refer to them often.
Make use of the training resources and information provided on our
website.
5. A Sense of Humor is mandatory.
Take
nothing too seriously, remember this is supposed to be fun. Joking
is well and good, belittlement and personal attack is not. See rule
#1. Then see rule #2.
6. Don't get frustrated.
Every
student has different experience levels, attributes, aptitudes,
and rates of progress in any given area. Do not get caught in the
trap of comparing your progress to that of others. Draw your own
line and don't get frustrated if you are having difficulty, no one
said it would be easy. Stay positive and keep going.
7. Know your limits, know your training priorities.
Remember
that rest and recovery are necessary for growth. You cannot train
100% intensity 100% of the time in all of the things we train. Make
a list of your priorities, and look out for conflicting training
methods.
8. Share what you know.
The
purpose of this school is to share experiences and knowledge in
the Martial Arts and Fitness. If you are not willing to share openly
what you know and have experienced, train somewhere else. There
are no secrets.
9. Be mindful, aware and motivated.
Some
answers require serious contemplation. Don't expect to be spoon
fed solutions. Remember that seeing it and understanding it are
different from knowing it. Knowing it takes time and repetition
and personal exploration. New information takes time to digest and
repetition to make it yours.
