A Letter from the Boss (Editorial) - Regarding Recent Terrorist Events

Originally Published 9.15.01

First of all, my heart goes out to those affected by recent events, those lost trying to help others, this tragedy is a horrible thing. I only hope that you and your loved ones were spared. I urge all of my students to stop in at the blood bank this week and donate blood, particularly if you are type "O+" - the Universal Donor, which is of great use in emergency situations, where time is critical and blood typing cannot be quickly or safely done.

Those of you who know me know that I have been a long time proponent of Buddhism and Taoism. I am saddened to see the results of extreme intolerance and impatience. It is unfortunate that the level of communication and consideration necessary to avoid such extreme levels of conflict are not present.

In times of disaster, when the total results of the situation are not yet known, and we sit hundreds of miles away, sometimes feeling powerless to help those most affected, it is important to remember that there is one thing that you can do that will affect the events to come. You can cultivate an air of compassion.

The Sage goes through life with three things; humility, compassion, and frugality. When people cease to tolerate communications with others, extreme action is born.

For those who are reacting with call for vengeance, more violence, I encourage you to read The War Prayer, by Mark Twain, as this gets to the heart of what you are describing.

As I have said in previous newsletters, and I want to make it clear, the nature and purpose of this school:

In training, when Fear and Desire have power over a student, the Art has a way of being reduced to mere violence. A victory conducted by means of violence should be conducted as a funeral.

"I shall teach as the Ancients taught,
A violent man shall come to an unnatural end,
I shall make this the basis of my Teaching."

Remember, extreme decisions are often born of insecurity. The problem with Martial Arts Training is that it often attracts many insecure people. You may choose to Not be one of them.
