Glossary
of Martial Arts Terminology
As
of September 5th, 2003, our Martial Arts Glossary holds over
2,450 terms from more than 20 separate systems of Martial
Arts, including translations from Japanese, Italian,
Cantonese, Spanish, Portugese, Tagalog
and other Filipino Dialects, French,
German, Old English, Latin, Greek, Okinawan, Thai,
Bahasay, Menangkabau and other Indonesian Dialects,
Sanskrit, and other cultural traditions and languages.
All
terms in the Glossary are listed Alphabetically. To look up
a term, simply choose a letter from the navigation bar above
and browse the list. You can also search
our site below for more information on that term or concept,
and suggest other terms for inlcusion. If you have suggested
terms, please be patient, our updates can take as long as
6 months or more
A Note regarding spelling:
Due
to the fact that many of these terms come from languages which
use different alphabets than that used in English, many of
these definitions are common spellings of Anglicized interpretations.
As with any interpretation, there may be different preferences
in spelling or pronunciation, and many terms may have more
than one meaning. In this regard, this glossary is not meant
to be complete and definitive, but rather a working resource
for our students and other visitors.
Our
goals with regards to this glossary have always been to speed
learning, protect and compile rare knowledge, spur curiosity
and to provide a starting point for further research. Great
thanks to our many, many, many, many contributors.
